Medical acupuncture is a modern treatment approach founded in concepts of neurology, anatomy and physiology. It is similar but not to be confused with traditional Chinese acupuncture. It involves strategic placement of sterile needles into various locations of the body. Medical and scientific research has shown that the beneficial results of Medical Acupuncture are muscle relaxation, modulating pain by alternating your autonomic fight or flight response and a general feeling of well being.
Medical Acupuncture is used by doctors and therapists alike for the treatment of chronic pain in addition to their regular treatment.
How does it work?
Acupuncture stimulates the nerves in skin and muscle and is known to produce a variety of effects such as increasing the body’s release of endorphin and serotonin in the pain pathways of the spinal cord and brain. This modifies the way pain signals are received. It also stimulates blood flow to the area(s) of insertion which promotes healing of muscle damage.
